Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infection or UTI is an infection caused due to microbes. UTI is a result of bacterial infection, but it may also be caused due to fungi and viruses. Almost every other person is affected by UTI once in their life.

UTI can affect any part of your urinary tracts, such as kidney, ureter, urethra or bladder. However, urethra and bladder are mostly affected due to UTI. Thus, UTI usually affects the lower parts of the urinary tract. The upper tract UTI may be rare, but it can be extremely severe, so it needs to be taken care of.

Women are prone to getting urinary tract infections as compared to men. Around 1 in every ten men will experience UTI once in their lifetime. But, a woman may be affected by UTI at least once or twice in their life.


The symptoms of UTI will vary depending on the part of the tract it affects. If the lower tracts are affected, symptoms would include

  • Bloody or cloudy urine
  • The pungent odor from urine
  • Increased urgency to urinate
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Women face pelvic pain
  • Men face rectal pain.

In the upper tracts, UTI will directly affect the kidneys, which can be life-threatening. The bacteria would move from the kidney to blood, thereby leading to urosepsis, which can cause shock or even death.

Symptoms of UTI affecting the upper tract include

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea


The failure to maintain cleanliness around your private parts is the primary reason for UTI. Most people may also have UTI due to genetics or underlying health conditions that can weaken the immune system.

Unprotected sex also makes the body exposed to the risk of getting the bacteria into the urinary tract.

Other causes of UTI include

  • Using urinary catheters
  • Abnormal urinary structure since birth
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Kidney stone
  • Reduced mobility


A healthy lifestyle can be the best solution for UTI. You may see a doctor who may prescribe antibiotics for treating urinary tract infections. Also, make sure to drink six to eight glasses of water each day to push bacteria out of the body. Cranberry juice is known to prevent UTI. A strong immune system can be the key to avoiding UTI.
