Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is one of the common joint conditions. This chronic condition affects the cartilage thereby leading to break down. Due to the cartilage break down, the bones rub against each other thereby causing pain, stiffness and more.

Osteoarthritis affects mostly older adults but often it can be observed in people of all ages, even children. It is for this reason, osteoarthritis is also referred to as degenerative joint diseases. As per the reports, osteoarthritis tends to affect millions of men and women globally.

Osteoarthritis is common chronic damage whose impact is irreversible. The symptoms can be managed so people look forward to maintaining weight and staying active in the long run to prevent the disease from progressing.

Causes

The cartilage acts as a cushion to the bones, but when the cartilage begins to degenerate, osteoarthritis starts taking place. The damage of cartilage will lead to bones rubbing against each other.

Osteoarthritis damage grows with time. Hence, age is one of the most common causes of osteoarthritis. The age of the person is directly proportional to the damage caused due to osteoarthritis.

Some of the common causes of osteoarthritis include

  • Dislocated joints
  • Ligament injuries
  • Torn cartilage

Bone inflammation, obesity, joint malformation, and poor posture are some other causes of osteoarthritis. Family history, gender and genes can also contribute to the increased risk of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis has a direct impact on the joints. It leads to bone deterioration and also impacts the muscles attached to the bone. Hence, the inflammation across joint linings becomes prominent

Symptoms

Osteoarthritis starts showing symptoms with progressing time. The problem worsens with increasing age. Some of the common signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include the following

  • Severe pain around the affected joints which may hinder movement.
  • Problems in carrying out full range motion due to loss of flexibility across joints.
  • When moving around, there might be a grating sensation across the bones.
  • Inflammation is observed across knees, shoulder joints and all the affected areas.
  • Joint stiffness while waking up or being inactive for long.

Treatment

Medicines and lifestyle changes are the best for osteoarthritis treatment. Over-the-counter medicines and home remedies only contribute to symptom management.

A healthy diet and physical activity such as exercise, jogging, and yoga to lose weight can help relax the joints’ stiffness.
